Mountain biking on the far south coast steps up a gear in 2012, with organisers of Tathra MTB Enduro announcing April 21/22 as the dates for next years’ event.

Entries for the marathon King Nelba 100km and the epic Goat’s Knob 50km open in December 2011 – via the website  www.mountainbiking.com.au.

Characterised by unparalleled  coastal scenery, sweeping single track and some gut wrenching climbs, the Tathra Enduro will again showcase the best coastal and wilderness MTB trails – incorporating the Mimosa Rocks National Park, the Tanja State Forest and the Tathra Doolagharl single track.

The Tathra MTB Enduro will feature five events across the weekend; a 10km timed prologue and  2km children’s race on Saturday (April 21), ahead of Sunday’s King Nelba 100km, Goat’s Knob 50km and the Doolagharl 20km.

In 2012 event is again pedalling a strong community cause, with all profits from the Enduro going towards renewable energy projects, and the development of sustainable mountain bike trails in the region.

Funds raised from this year’s Enduro provided solar panels for the Bega Aboriginal Land Council and the Uniting Church, and a wind turbine for the Tathra Surf Club.

“The Tathra Enduro is back for 2012,” Event organiser Jake Iskov announced today.

“We have a new date and some new and exciting trails to race on.

 “The King Nelba 100km will be as challenging as ever, but we will be streamlining the course to take the sting from the tail of the event.

“There are also some surprises in store in the Goat’s Knob 50km – but you will have to wait and see what they are,” teased Iskov.

Iskov said the staging of the event on the last weekend of the NSW Easter school holidays was aimed at encouraging families to visit the coastal town.

“Tathra is famous for its sun and surf – now we’ve added the single track – which makes it the ideal family getaway.”

Where do the profits go?- Cycling for a Community Cause.
The Tathra MTB Enduro is a collaboration between not for profit organisations, the Wilderness Coast and Snowy Mountains MTB Club Inc and sustainable energy group Clean Energy for Eternity (CEFE).

In 2006 CEFE was instrumental in persuading the Bega Valley Shire Council to adopt its 50/50 by 2020 clean energy target. The Snowy River, Bombala and Cooma Shire Councils have also adopted this target which requires 50 per cent of each shire’s energy requirements to come from renewable sources by the year 2020.

The Tathra MTB Enduro continues to support the 50/50 by 2020 campaign with profits from the Enduro going towards sustainable energy projects for the community.  

Wilderness Coast and Snowy Mtns Mountain Bike Club Inc.

Canberra speedster Andy Blair turned up the heat on local riders to capture the Frosty Feet MTB Enduro title at Tathra on the weekend.

Blair continued his love affair with the south coast trails winning the 3hr Enduro by a comfortable 18 minutes from fellow Canberran Ryan Gormly, with Pambula’s Toby Stewart  third.

Under sunny skies the trio completed 10 laps of the Doolagharl singletrack – or 67.5km – in the allotted three hours – with Blair notching up the fastest lap time of 17minutes.06 seconds over the 6.75km circuit.

The win was Blair’s second three hour victory, after winning a similar event staged at the Bermagui Mountain Bike Park earlier in the year.

“I like rough and rocky trails, so the tracks on the south coast suit me,” said 32-year-old Blair. “Compared to Canberra they are raw, a bit looser and I find it a bit more exciting to race on.”

Blair, a former international World Cup racer, also took time during the race to encourage the younger riders like Stewart .

“It was awesome to race a few laps early with the young fellers and teach them about race craft and give them some encouragement.”

Blair was not the only rider to shine in the event – which attracted a field of 63.

Encouragingly there were over 30 local riders, many racing for the first time, along with riders from Melbourne, Orbost, Bateman’s Bay, Cooma and Canberra.

In a fitting result for Father’s Day, the father and son combination of David and Andrew Hall of Brogo won the men’s open pairs, ahead of Tathra dads Chris Korvin and Ross Levido.

Bega’s Bob Britten and Rob Gordjin placed second and third in the men’s over 45s.

The Junior Pairs was won by the local combination of Roly Stewart and Charlie Todd, and the High School Triples was secured by Ryan Crowley, Jed Lambie and Lewis McCartney.

Whilst not scoring a podium finish, Bermagui’s Joshua Humphries was the second highest placed local in the highly competitive open men’s field. He placed sixth overall completing nine laps in the three hours.

Eden’s Jo Clark was the best placed local female in fourth in the open women’s division, one lap behind winner Libby Adamson (8 laps).

In the children’s races – Tathra’s Curtis Woodley grabbed victory in the 1km showdown from Nimmity Ford and Jorja Robbers.  Bega’s Sebastian Weber was victorious in the 3km event.

WILDERNESS COAST WINTER WARMERS MTB SERIES

BEWARE THE DOOLAGHARL?

What? You’ve never heard of the doolagharl?

Tathra is famous for more than its sun, surf and singletrack.

The doolagharl or hairyman is a mythical Aboriginal creature who lives in the local wilderness. Big and hairy, dirty and smelly! 

So if you are into indigenous wildlife (read: doolagharls, wombats, echidnas and roos);  towering trees and want to find out why people are raving about the single track on the Far South Coast of NSW head to Tathra on Sunday, September 4 for the Frosty Feet 3hr Enduro.

September’s  Frosty Feet 7km singletrack loop will be fast and fun – and (for those who know the track) it WON’T feature the “BRIDGES”.

To keep you on your toes - we’ve recently reconfigured the trail, so there will be a few different twists and turns than the Tathra Enduro.

 September is also a special month down south because it’s SPRING.  Sun, warmth and good coffee are all on hand.  Did we mention the average daily temperature is upward of 19 degrees......and you’ll need the sunburn cream instead of the woollen balaclava!

What else do we need to do to convince you to head on down?

Well – racing starts the “travel friendly” time of 11am.

We’ve got fun prizes including socks – for those Frozen Feet, Skydiving from OzSkydive Moruya, accommodation packages from Tathra Beach House and Blue Pacific Bermagui AND coffee and muffins from the Tathra Pickle Factory.

To encourage all ability of riders we also are offering entry options of solos and pairs. Twist our arms and we’ll look at Threesomes.

There’s also junior categories and a kids race (Under 7s, Under 15s) on Sunday at 10.30am.

Race HQ is the Tathra Country Club – 1km north of Tathra on the Tathra/ Bermagui Road.  Look for the kangaroos grazing on the oval and you’re there. We’ll have the BBQ firing, and drinks are also available.

Don’t like the snow? Looking for a coastal winter escape, with a “hint” of mountain bike racing?

The crew behind the Tathra MTB Enduro has some events sure to warm the cockles of your heart – the Wilderness Coast Winter Warmer MTB Series.

On Saturday, July 16 we join forces with Canberra’s premier mountain bike club - CORC - at Merimbula’s Manna Park for Round 3 of CORC’s XC racing series. Racing starts at 1pm and is open to all – with further category and entry details at www.corc.asn.au

Saturday’s sprints are a mere curtain raiser for Sunday, July 17’s - Frozen Fingers 3HR Enduro.

If you want to really “thaw” those fingers enter the 3hr solo category - but to make it fun, we’ve included pairs (mens, womens and mixed) and a junior category.

If you haven’t ridden Manna Park, you are in for a treat. These ripping XC trails are situated in private bushland north of Merimbula and form part of the science centre and eco-retreat that is Mandeni Resort and Manna Park.

Manna Park sports a 7km single trail loop.  The trail capitalises on the landscape:  ducking and weaving through creeks and overhanging rainforests, climbing though tall eucalypts before a hair-raising descent. 

It’s here the gung-ho can really pin their ears back and give it some, but it’s no less heart pumping if you only want to tackle it half throttle.

The descent incorporates the odd rock garden, bridge and log rollover. (But anything tricky has a B-line).

Either way save some gas for the final forest fling, this super fast fire trail propels you back to the start/finish.

The course is designed to challenge cardio capacity, confidence and skills – but leave you smiling.

Frosty Fingers Enduro Racing starts at 11am – (to allow for some thawing).

We are not racing for Dairy Farms – but we guarantee plenty of fun, and some unique prizes.

Racing categories include solos, pair and junior categories.

Great news the Tathra single trail is now LEGAL. We have signed an historical agreement with the local Aboriginal Lands Council for dual use of the track. We were also successful in a grant application to the Mumbulla Foundation which has allowed us to work with the Lands Council and employ local indidgenous workers in the development of the track.

The result is fantastic. Course designer Andy Johnson and his crew have constructed over 15km of new single trail. That's more than double what was there. It also helps when you get a 1.7tonne excavator donated for two months. Gotta love Complete Hire - The most generous gift to a mountain bike club.

Now finished the track is looking and riding well. Twelve new bridges, two new downhills.  Some of it's fast and swoopy, some is tight and techy - but it's all great fun. Mother nature has also come to the party - we've had sunshine and rain to help us bed-in the new trails.  

Those who have ridden Tathra's old Poo Ponds - won't recognise the trails - two new downhills, downhills that are ridden uphill - a super fast ridge run and new name. In recognition of the Indidgenous land owners the new trail set is called Doolagharl - meaning HairyMan or Yowie. 'Yes' they are out there!
